CONDITION FOR THE SCOTT SISTERS RELEASE

A few weeks ago on BLAKstar Talk we were discussing current events and I shed much needed light on the Scott Sisters.

Jamie, 38, and Gladys, 36, are serving life sentences in Mississippi for their role in a 1993 robbery that netted $11, despite having no prior criminal record. The three men also arrested in connection with the robbery pleaded guilty and have served their terms. Two of them testified against the sisters in return for lesser sentences.

The Scott sisters were accused of orchestrating the armed robbery of two men on a rural road near Forest, Miss., on Christmas Eve 1993. According to court documents, the sisters enticed the two men to take them on a ride to a nearby nightclub. Witnesses testified that during the ride Jamie Scott complained of nausea. When the car pulled over three men in a following car robbed them at gunpoint. After the robbery, the victims testified the sisters left with the three men. Both the victims and the accused are black.(via USAToday)

RELEASE OF THE SISTERS NOW IN PROGRESS
Two Mississippi sisters who have spent 16 years in prison over an $11 armed robbery will be released with an unusual stipulation -- one must donate a kidney to the other.
Gov. Haley Barbour, who suspended their sentences, said Wednesday that Gladys Scott, 36, must donate a kidney to her sister, Jamie, 38.

Although they would be eligible for parole in 2014, the Department of Corrections "believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society" and their incarceration is no longer necessary for rehabilitation, Barbour said in a statement.

And Jamie Scott's kidney dialysis treatment creates a substantial cost to the state, said Barbour.
Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Christopher B. Epps, who agreed with the decision to suspend the sentences, said Jamie Scott's three-times-a-week dialysis costs the state about $190,000 a year.
The announcement pleased the NAACP and other civil rights advocates who have pressed for the sisters' release in rallies and at other forums. (via CNN)

PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUT BILL

After weeks of compromise between both bodies of Congress, the president has signed in to law the Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010 (H.R. 4853), extending the Bush-era tax cuts for two years and unemployment insurance benefits for jobless Americans for 13 months.

Despite opposition from some Democrats, the House worked late into the evening Thursday, passing it by a vote of 277-148.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) vowed to push for a bill next year that would fund the government at 2008 levels during a press conference held earlier todaye praised the Senate for dropping plans last night to pass a package of spending bills, known as the omnibus. The incoming House Speaker also talks about the Republican majority’s agenda for the 112th Congress and other economic measures.

McDONALD'S HIT WITH A CLASS ACTION SUIT

McDonald's is being sued by a group of consumers and nutrition advocates for using toys to entice children to buy meals they say are unhealthy.

According to CNNMoney.com:
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which filed the class action suit in a California court Wednesday, claims that McDonald's violates the state's consumer protection laws by using toys to market Happy Meals to young children.

The suit was brought on behalf of Monet Parham, a mother of two in Sacramento, and other plaintiffs, the CSPI said. "I object to the fact that McDonald's is getting into my kids' heads without my permission and actually changing what my kids want to eat," Parham said in a statement.

CSPI threatened to sue McDonald's in June, but the company refused to discuss ways to avoid a law suit, the group said.

McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500) pledged to fight the suit in a statement.

"We are proud of our Happy Meals and intend to vigorously defend our brand, our reputation and our food," said company spokesperson Bridget Coffing. "We are confident that parents understand and appreciate that Happy Meals are a fun treat, with quality, right-sized food choices for their children that can fit into a balanced diet."

The lawsuit charges that using toys to market Happy Meals to young children is illegal because it "is inherently deceptive and unfair." McDonald's advertising is also unfair to its competitors, who do not choose to attract very young children with the lure of a toy, according to the complaint.

Is it me or are people not accountable for their actions now? Of course the toys are used to entice the kids however you as the adult/parent choose what's appropriate for your child. So if your child is whining and crying about a toy from McDonald's simply tell him/her "NO!" Now it may be very easy for me to say this since I do not have children of my own and I'm sure it's easier to say yes than no to your child but to sue a food chain simply because you aren't able to take control of the situation is absurd. Are they going after Cracker Jacks next? Or the cereal brands with the toys?  The lawsuit also stated "McDonald's advertising is also unfair to its competitors, who do not choose to attract very young children with the lure of a toy." Really? Isn't that what competition is about?

Quite frankly stop passing the blame and take accountability!

How do you feel BLAKstar? Should McDonald's be sued for placing toys in their Happy Meals?

TIME MAGAZINE: 'PERSON OF THE YEAR 2010'

According to Time:

For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is Time’s 2010 Person of the Year.

On the afternoon of Nov. 16, 2010, Mark Zuckerberg was leading a meeting in the Aquarium, one of Facebook’s conference rooms, so named because it’s in the middle of a huge work space and has glass walls on three sides so everybody can see in. Conference rooms are a big deal at Facebook because they’re the only places anybody has any privacy at all, even the bare minimum of privacy the Aquarium gets you. Otherwise the space is open plan: no cubicles, no offices, no walls, just a rolling tundra of office furniture. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, who used to be Lawrence Summers’ chief of staff at the Treasury Department, doesn’t have an office. Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO and co-founder and presiding visionary, doesn’t have an office.

OUR PRAYERS GO OUT TO ARETHA FRANKLIN AND FAMILY!

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

The Father of MeaLee of BLAKstar is asking for donations to be able to buy bags of chicken that are 10 pounds each to give to the needy and elderly during this holiday season in Lima, Ohio. He has done this every year since 1990. Last year he gave out 600+ bags of chicken. This year, due to my many operations and his health not in the condition it once was he cannot fund this alone. Anything big or small will help, $5 will go a long way.
Please send donations to:

FREE CREDIT REPORTS: GET YOURS!

Every 12 months Americans are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies, Equafax, Experian and TransUnion. You can order all three at once or over the course of a year. Not many people really want to deal with their credit, or face their spending habits and mistakes of the past. If we don't face the truth, we can never change it. Besides, you may find a mistake on your report, or a bill listed that you have already paid off. In those cases, there is an address on the report where you can send in proof of payment or write a letter to dispute the charges. It's important to know exactly where you stand, so that you can form a plan to get to where you want to go (open that business or buy a house). In my experience, creditors will work with you, once you get them on the phone. They will reduce your APR (finance charges), remove late fees, or set a different due date, at your request. Just ask. So, before you spend all your money trying to impress people on Christmas, handle your business at www.annualcreditreport.com. Thank me later.

ELIZABETH EDWARDS PASSES AT 61

Elizabeth Edwards, who closely advised her husband in two bids for the presidency and advocated for health care even as her own health and marriage publicly crumbled, died Tuesday after a six-year struggle with cancer. She was 61.

She died at her North Carolina home surrounded by her three children, siblings, friends and her estranged husband, John, the family said.

"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but, she remains the heart of this family," the family said in a statement. "We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, in the final days of her husband's vice presidential campaign. The Democratic John Kerry-John Edwards ticket lost to incumbent President George W. Bush.

John Edwards launched a second bid for the White House in 2007, and the Edwardses decided to continue even after doctors told Elizabeth that her cancer had spread. He lost the nomination to Barack Obama.

The couple separated in January after he admitted fathering a child with a campaign videographer.

FROM HER EYES - MARA HRUBY

Introducing the new and fast rising twenty-two year old artist, Mara Hruby, from Oakland, CA.  She burst onto the scene in the beginning of 2010 playing shows all around the Bay Area and is now releasing her debut EP “From Her Eyes”.  This is her first release of music to the world and it will say a lot about her character and vision as an artist.  Mara Hruby worked on this album for a total of nine months and even went as far as recording and arranging/engineering her own vocals.  As a true artist, she jumps right into her dreams and doesn’t emerge until a full, final, conceptualized, and complete project has risen.  “From Her Eyes” is an EP of cover songs originally recorded by male artists, and each song has represented a moment in her life.  She is covering artists such and Mos Def, Andre 3000, Jamiroquai, even D’Angelo and a few others.  She is a mesmerizing artist that puts on a show with poise and grace, and she’ll bring you into her heart like no other.
