NEW MUSIC - TIFFANY EVANS "I'LL BE THERE"

Rarely do I hear songs that are so beautiful that I am moved me to tears. The new single by the ever so talented Tiffany Evans I'll Be There is beyond just a good song. The words and melody are simple but the message, her voice together over a great track are no less than soul stirring. She sings of being there for someone when they go through storms and bad times in life. The song is inspirational, a testament that there is still GREAT music being made - good writing/lyrics, beautiful arrangement and fantastic singing from a wonderful artist.
I dare yall to listen and not have to hold back at least a tear or two.

Tiffany this song is now on my heavy rotation.

HISTORY OF RAP - JIMMY FALLON & JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

Last night Justin Timberlake was a guest on the popular late night show hosted by Jimmy Fallon. I have learned that whenever Justin is on anyone's show expect it to be a hilarious few minutes - then ad in Jimmy Fallon - that is a recipe for gut busting, side splitting laughs.I have sat and watched this at least 3 times and everytime it is hilarious.

Oh and how can I not say anything about The Roots? They KILLED it. I love them they are sooo talented and I like seeing their musical genius every night via Jimmy Fallon's show.

PRESIDENT OBAMA ON THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE

President Barack Obama is open and honest in an interview with Rolling Stone. Check out some excerpts below:

When you came into office, you felt you would be able to work with the other side. When did you realize that the Republicans had abandoned any real effort to work with you and create bipartisan policy?

Well, I'll tell you that given the state of the economy during my transition, between my election and being sworn in, our working assumption was that everybody was going to want to pull together, because there was a sizable chance that we could have a financial meltdown and the entire country could plunge into a depression. So we had to work very rapidly to try to create a combination of measures that would stop the free-fall and cauterize the job loss.

Let's talk about the war in Afghanistan. Where were you when you first heard about the comments made by Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his staff, and how did you feel as you read them for yourself?

I was in my office in the residence, in the Treaty Room. Joe Biden called me — he was the first one who heard about it. I think it was Sunday night, and I had one of the staff here send me up a copy, and I read through the article. I will say at the outset that I think Gen. McChrystal is a fine man, an outstanding soldier, and has served this country very well. I do not think that he meant those comments maliciously. I think some of those comments were from his staff, and so he was poorly served. And it pained me to have to make the decision I did. Having said that, he showed bad judgment. When I put somebody in charge of the lives of 100,000 young men and women in a very hazardous situation, they've got to conduct themselves at the highest standards, and he didn't meet those standards.

What has surprised you the most about these first two years in office? What advice would you give your successor about the first two years?

Over the past two years, what I probably anticipated but you don't fully appreciate until you're in the job, is something I said earlier, which is if a problem is easy, it doesn't hit my desk. If there's an obvious solution, it never arrives here — somebody else has solved it a long time ago. The issues that cross my desk are hard and complicated, and oftentimes involve the clash not of right and wrong, but of two rights. And you're having to balance and reconcile against competing values that are equally legitimate.

What I'm very proud of is that we have, as an administration, kept our moral compass, even as we've worked through these very difficult issues. Doesn't mean we haven't made mistakes, but I think we've moved the country in a profoundly better direction just in the past two years.

BOOK RELEASE: DECODED - JAY-Z

Spiegel & Grau to Publish Book by Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter on 11/16/10!

New York, NY (September 22, 2010)— On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter and publisher Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of the Random House Publishing Group, are set to release Decoded, the first book written by the multi-platinum, 10 time Grammy Award winning entrepreneur and icon. Unique in every sense, Decoded is a narrative journey through the lyrics and life of one of the most prolific artists of our time.

Featuring an image of Andy Warhol’s Rorschach on the cover, the beautifully designed, fully-illustrated book decodes 36 songs from JAY-Z’s extensive catalog. By telling the stories behind some of Jay-Z’s most famous and provocative lyrics, Decoded offers an intimate, first-hand account of an artist, his work, and the culture that so powerfully shaped him.

In addition to the hardcover release, Random House will publish Decoded as an eBook, as well as an interactive iPhone/iPad application that will include exclusive video and customizable content that will allow users to delve into a deeper Decoded experience.

“This is a book that could only have come from JAY-Z. Every aspect of it reflects his style and ambition and heart. The unique structure he devised – combining intense personal narratives with revealing ‘decodings’ of some of his most powerful lyrics – underlines his central mission for the book: to use his famously layered and poetic lyrics and his one-of-a-kind life story to tell a wider story about the world he grew up in and the transformative power of hip-hop. JAY’s rigorous attention to every detail of the book, right down to the book’s jacket, which he art directed, was impressive, and the depth of his thinking – about his experiences and lyrics, but also about the creative process, the poetry of hip-hop, and the art of life – was a constant revelation. This is a book that will offer gratifying surprises and insights to both the long-time JAY-Z fan and to the reader who might meet him here for the first time.”

– Chris Jackson, Executive Editor, Spiegel & Grau

FROM DECODED

When I first started working on this book, I told my editor that I wanted it to do three important things. The first was to make the case that hip-hop lyrics—not just my lyrics, but those of every great MC—are poetry if you look at them closely enough. The second was I wanted the book to tell a little bit of the story of my generation, to show the context for the choices we made at a violent and chaotic crossroads in recent history. And the third piece was that I wanted the book to show how hip-hop created a way to take a very specific and powerful experience and turn it into a story that everyone in the world could feel and relate to.” – JAY-Z

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER - PLUS SIZE FASHION

On September 15, 2010 history was made in New York City. The first ever plus sized fashion show during NYC's famed Fashion Week was hosted by OneStopPlus.com, gracing the runway with beautiful models, clothing and accessories. I'm wondering, what has taken so long? Two-thirds of American women are over a size 14 and the fashion needs of these women are now a 47 million dollar industry (www.time.com). In America in the 1950's, the pin up models were at least a size 12 and icon Marylin Monroe wore a size 14. In modern day Hollywood, if an actress is not a "sample" size 4 she is scrutinized for being overweight. Every pound she gains is monitored by the public and she is put on"baby bump" alert and talk becomes of finding reasons to why she has gained weight.
What caused America to change it's view on beauty? When did the "average" size change from a size 12+ to a size 0?

In many foreign countries, like Africa, being full figured is a sign of health, wealth and fertility. Superficial standards of beauty are set around the world and there is no common standard of international beauty. The perceptions of young women are determined by their individual cultures'. Many women struggle all over the globe with the way that they look because they feel they can't live up to the perfect standards that they are bombarded with in the media. Companies like Dove are now showing the truth about the perfect images protrayed in the media. Celebrities are retouched, elongated, slimmed, nipped and tucked. So who is to say who is beautiful and who isn't? [see BLAKstar's previous post on Dove and their time lapse video showing a model photo from start to finish.]

Are we able to go deeper and look past the physical attributes of people? Can we accept our peers as they are and respect each other for our personalities, character and accomplishments? Or are we doomed to conform to the social, economic and physical pressures that divide instead of unite us?

In my opinion true beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is it that your eyes see?

BLAKSTAR TALKS WITH ACTRESS PAM GRIER

I am still so excited from meeting and speaking with Pam Grier today that I am not sure where to start. She is a phenomenal woman and her outer beauty has nothing on the fantastic woman and spirit she is on the inside. Her willingness to be open and to tell her story candidly was refreshing and beautiful.

Pam spoke of her love for helping people. Going into detail of how she rescues animals and works with everyone from single African American Female farmers to children, made her giving spirit apparent throughout the time we spent with her. I wouldn't call this an interview but an experience. One of those moments in life we always remember, always talk about and have truly learned from.

Pam is on a national tour promoting her memoirs: My Life In Three Acts. I strongly suggest when she comes to your area to attend the book signing event - it is well worth it. Her book is a real look at her life, her childhood, rise to fame and her battle with cancer. She also shares lessons, about living to the fullest and healing emotionally, physically and mentally all things she has learned while on this incredible journey that is her life.

BLAKstar appreciates Ms. Grier (she told me to just call her Pam lol) for taking the time and sharing with us the knowledge she has gained over her extraordinary life.

Pam not only is Bridging Love Art and Knowledge - she continues to build the bridges that many of us walk on today and we thank her for her gifts she openly gives to us all.

SHARING IS NOT ALWAYS CARING

I'm not sure about you but I make a frequent habit of checking and updating my facebook privacy and account settings. It seems as though the social network site as well as many others are always updating their policies as well as what they will and will not share voluntarily and what I have to manually opt out of. There are certain things that I do not feel that people need to know. Not that I am hiding anything but analysts say there are certain things we can and do reveal through social media that can make us susceptible to identity theft and actual physical theft and harm. I suggest you check your settings, see what your friends and what random people (who are not your friends) can see and have access to - you maybe surprised what you are opening yourself up to. The article [after the jump] I found interesting because a few of the "do nots" I can't lie I have done and did without thinking. For example posting statuses that indicate where and when I am leaving for vacation [I'm sure we have all done that at least once], which can clue thieves into when you may not be home or when you may not be logging into your facebook or other accounts for awhile. Meaning, if they hacked you at that time you may not know for several days while you are enjoying vacation bliss or they can choose to actually rob you while you are not home. After the jump is a great article with six things you should not reveal on social networking sites, do you have any?

2010 MTV VMA's RECAP

As a reminder that MTV still plays videos, last night the Video Music Awards took place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Lady Gaga dominated the show winning eight awards, including Video of the Year, Best Pop Video, and Best Female Video for “Bad Romance.” She also won Best Collaboration with Beyonce for the video “Telephone.” Eminem was awarded the Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video for “Not Afraid.” “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys won Best Cinematography.
For the past five years or so, I told myself I’m not going to watch the VMAs. Yet every year I’m drawn in.

Two of the main reasons people watch the VMAs are the music and the potential drama. Many say that music isn’t like it used to be. I was looking more forward to seeing Lady Gaga’s incredible costumes than to some of the performances. From her spiky headdress to her butcher-inspired gear, she did not disappoint. As far as drama goes - there was none, which was very nice. Kanye West and Taylor Swift didn’t face off on stage with boxing gloves, instead they expressed themselves using their musical prowess. Although she assisted in sending the VMA's rating to levels they have not seen in eight years, Chelsea Handler’s attempt at hosting made me long for Chris Rock’s sharp and hilarious wisecrack.
Last night’s show was the highest rated VMAs since 2002, attracting 11.9 million viewers. I wonder how many of those viewers were just following tradition, plopping in front of MTV on autopilot versus those who were tuning in to see performances by Justin Beiber, Drake, Kanye and Taylor Swift  and the actual awards show and the recipients .

How did you feel about the awards last night?
Christine

BLAKSTAR REMEMBERS: WHAT WERE YOU DOING ON 9/11

This year is the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that not only devastated the United States but the affected the entire world. Al-Qaeda recruited a total of nineteen suicide killers to assist in their coordination of wreaking havoc on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. Viciously their weapons of choice were four commercial jetliners filled with innocent passengers, who never knew that their freedom would be taken into custody as part of the senseless killings of over 2,996 people.

I remember going to work that day and it beginning as a regular normal day. A few hours later one my co-workers came into to work screaming, “Oh my God somebody just flew a plane into one of the twin towers and the Pentagon.” Instantly I stood up and gathered with the other ladies in the healthcare office around the mini TV she had. We all stood there in horror, we couldn’t believe what are eyes were letting us see. A billow of smoke and fire poured out of the first tower as we all gasped in horror watching helplessly another airplane crash into the second tower.

I felt an instant heaviness in my stomach and I ran away crying. All I could think about was my family members and in-laws that I knew worked in downtown Manhattan. Frantically I called my husband, only to hear him answer the call crying in despair unable to get a call through to New York. All phone lines to New York were jammed because of the chaos and people trying to call into that area. Crying, I said a prayer, because there was nothing else that could be done.

I felt empathy for all those who lost a mother, a father, a child or a friend. The event taught me to never take life or the people in your life for granted and always live as if it is your last day.

On today, 9-11-10 we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on this catastrophic event that took place nine years ago. Even though the years may pass by the memories of those lost will never tarnish nor fade.

Through this blog we want to hear your thoughts by answering these three questions:

When it took place, where were you? How did it affect you? What have you learned from it?

I personally am excited for her new album with hits from her previously such as Slow Dance, Alienated, Energy and some others [that are still in my heavy rotation] some new music from her is indeed a good thing! Rather or not this cut makes the album I like it. Her sweet vocals and catchy lyrics always make for good music.
